Need some pine position opinions.

Messing around and hypothecating about changing a pine.
All input appreciated.
Big change.

Thinking of lopping a large limb and trying a new front. I...think..I made a mistake on one limb near the top that I removed a few years ago. But I need an OUTSIDE opinion.

As it is, it's ....okay..... but would the lean toward the viewer be more pleasing?

Your pine is certainly growing with vigor. However, it is difficult to see the trunk line with that many branches and needles.

Have you thought about making a shorter tree using the first branch as the new apex?

Regards,

Matt

Lightbulb

Good call Matt, the Japanese resort to the first branch as the new tree frequently. Kazoo the rock adds nothing at all to the composition.

Regards Ash

The first branch is almost 3/4"

How to make it the apex? Wedge graft?

hard to see trunkline, but in my opinion i think you could accomplish alot with this tree just be experimenting with the planting angle...and about the rock...i find it distracting...ill take a closer look and post a more detailed proposition...

how big are you wanting this tree to eventually be?
looking at the proposed front...why remove right now what would appear to be a perfect sacrifice branch? if you want the tree to end up the height it is now, i would let that branch grow for some time to help with thickening the lower trunk...if you are satisfied with the trunk diameter then tghe tree needs to be shortened...after looking at this more carefully, if this was my tree i would choose pic #35278 and take a close look at tilting the tree to the left a bit...this would also help make the tree a bit shorter and give the trunk a more dynamic appearance...i would leave the back brach as a sacrifice branch for atleast 2 more years...letting it grow freely while keeping the rest in shape and creating some nice ramification...just some thoughts

...Mike

Kazzooo,
If it were mine I would keep the same front. I would lean the tree forward and to the right slightly with a guy wire. I would take off old needles that were hanging straight down. then I would trim any junction that has three leaders down to two, and pray for back budding . then water and organic fertilizer. Then reevauate next winter, when it is in healthier condition.

Rock...

maybe i am misunderstanding you...but in my opinion, keeping the current front and leaning forward to the right would actually take away lower trunk movement. unless there was a drastic change in angle to the right, the lower 3rd of the trunk would be almost completely straight up, then the upper 2 3rds of the trunk would have all the movement...i think the viewer would be drawn to view the top 2 3rds, completely overlooking the lower trunk and nebari...just my opinion

Some new pictures. TRIED to de-needle it a bit but they are LOOOONNNNGGG needles. Have no idea of species. Got it from estate of a bonsai club guy and questioning the dead is fruitless.

Anyhow.... hard to photo in an encompassing way.

But here's some new anyhow. Please excuse any difficulty in reading the text. The size acceptable before is now considered too large so had to reduce.

(the rock has been removed and is in the mail to all its fans)
