Unhappy need info on maples

I bought a trident maple 2 month ago, my first :-) the problem is that it came from the west coast were it was warm, the day after I received it the weather got very cold here in Virginia, we had a heavy frost for 3 nights in a row so I brought the tree inside until the weather got warmer ( it was not out side in the frost at all ),about a week and a half ( this has been a crazy very cold spring ) The tree was just getting it leaves when it was shipped ( priority mail ) was very nice looking tree when i got it. The problem is all the leaves dried up and fell off . Did I kill the poor thing ?? could it be shipping shock ?? If not how long dose it take to re-bud ? Please any info will be helpful to this maple newbie ...... staring at the tree for hours to make bud appear has not worked .......lol sorry I have to joke about it , if not I will cry .

did you try the scratch test? scratch the bark with your fingernail. if you see green your in good shape. if not...well, we will get to that later.

This has happened to a couple of my japanese maples that were sitting out in the shed and started to leaf but got caught in a hard frost too. They are noticeably weaker than the trees that I protected better, but they are still living. Also, depending on how cold it was, what you should be more worried about it whether or not the roots froze too. However, I suspect it should still be alive, but like md4958 said, scratch the bark to see if the cambium is still green, if yes, it's still alive. Be careful not to over water though you might drown the roots and cause root rot.

Where in Va. do you live? From what I've seen, it's not been an overly cold spring this year. Below freezing spells haven't been common at all, at least I haven't been forced to bring trees inside. I usually have to lug all 25-30 of them into the house at least once in late March and April during the last 15 years or so.

Anyway, your tree is probably fine. The leaf loss was, hopefully, just a shock because of temperature shifts. However, it could also be a sign the tree dried out. in any case, get hte tree back outside (even if frost is in the forecast at night--only remeber to bring the tree inside before it gets dark. Return it outside when temperatures climb above freezing the next day.

Get the plant into full sun as much as possible. Keep it moist, don't keep it soggy. Wait, Wait and wait. It should push new growth in few weeks. Don't do any stying on this plant this year.
