I got there sunday and it looked like the vending area had been picked over. I picked up a few pots that I wanted (and left many more that I wanted). The selection of stock was very limited, but you'd expect that being that there was only another hour or so of expo time left. Richard Boggs seemed to be giving a pretty good demo of juniper from nursery stock. He also stressed the importance of not doing things to stress the tree (ie. repotting out of season for instant-bonsai).

The arboretum collection is astounding. Not that I'm particularly well-travelled, or knowledgable of the collections that are out there, but this competes favorably with at least one highly-recommended collection on the west coast. I was amazed by an Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus) that looked extremely refined. This collection has a very appalachian take on bonsai, done very well. If you're ever near the Blue Ridge Parkway (at least the asheville side of it) stop by. Very worth the $6 parking fee.

The different bonsai societies near the carolinas always put on a great show. Their trees were excellent. I wonder who won best display (and which tree got the crowd pick?)

I'm sure pictures will follow. I have several but will need to work them into a format accessible for the most of you.

Wayne Ficklin

ps. Does anyone know what the auction trees went for?

I went through the show and quickly took snapshots of all the club trees that were on display. You can see them here.

If you're dying for some pics and have a.) time to kill or b.) a fat pipe (internet connection in excess of dial-up with (a.) time to kill or b.) speeds in excess of normal dsl) then feel free to take a gander at the following link. I haven't had time to resize these pics and using Gimp on Windows I haven't found a good batch program.... yet. Photoshop at home might be the trick.... stay posted.

(The Pinus strobus is one of the early pics, i think it needs to be rotated slightly.... just lean your head for the time being.)

Again, this is a huge page!

I just went through the photos from Ron and then I went through yours. I was quite dumbfounded to find one of my paintings among the Ashville's Arboretum... I wish I could have read the card in the lower right corner, as this painting was won at a raffle at Ron Martin's Last festival show in September of 2001.

I'm always interested in the history of my paintings and wondered if it is part of the Arboretum or was just on loan for the show.

Carl
Hellen Davis won it at the 2001 raffle.
As far as I know she has donated it to the NC Arboretum's bonsai art colection.
What they have done with it I am not sure. I missed seeing it at the show.
I do know that it hung in her living room for a long time and that she did like it a lot.
I can check on it if you want me to.

It was for sell. She had donated it for the betterment of the Bonsai Pavillion. I was dumbfounded to see it, after having seen it posted a week or so ago. The picture wasn't the best (my photography) but then, for the price they were asking you'd not want it to be duplicatable via digital photography. PM me if you wanna know anything else.

The above link should be to edited images that shouldn't take nearly as long to download.

Thanks, Ron:
I knew that Helen Davis had won the painting.. I have that in my records, I was just curious how it ended up in North Carolina. I hope it is in their permanent collection.

Here are a few pics of our club (Bonsai Club of South Carolina) display. I had to leave on Saturday, I heard that we won the best club display, as awarded by Dan Robinson of Elandan Garden. I am not sure which tree won best in show or peoples choice award, but the Atlanta group won for the most innovative display. They used an abundance of stones and natural material to mimic the forest floor...looked good!

All the best,
