The big pine in question is the Yamaki pine and is indeed a survivor of the Hiroshima nuclear attack. It was 350 years old when it was given in 1976, which would make it almos 380 years old now. I suspect they baby this tree since it is an absolutely irreplaceable treasure. To see it in person is a transcendental experience. The first time I saw this tree was in my first year of bonsai and I was completely blown away. I must have stood in front of it for at least 20 minutes. Probably looked like a complete fool, but that's ok. The tree seems to be the centerpiece of the upcoming World Bonsai event in DC in May.
This is a wonderful picture of the tree covered with snow. I have a picture of it taken during the summer. Maybe I'll photoshop a composite to show the pot. Craig Cowing NY Zone 5b/6a Sunset 37
