I was recently at the Arboretum attending the PBA exhibit and sale. I toured the various museums and saw nothing similar to what you refer. I even remember noting about how some of the trees from Japan looked almost artificial due to being so perfectly manicured. One thing that I did notice is the abundance of carpenter bees that like to bore into the support and lattice structures, but there is no attempt to actively control them due to the museum being outdoors.
The outrage is slow in coming. Several threads here have listed several sites, not the least of which is for the National Bonsai Foundation. On their site (google it) there is a link where you can "sign" a petition to express your distaste for White House budget cutting with respect to the Arboretum in general, and the National Bonsai and Penjing museums, specifically. I spoke with Jim Hughes (current curator) and he said they are already feeling the pinch, and the real cuts have not even taken effect yet. They operate largely with trained volunteers and are likely spread very thin. Several of our club members are volunteers and routinely tell of long hours of maintenance involved in keeping this national treasure viable. Everyone should do your part and contact your respective congressperson. It matters. |

I did write my Congresswoman, Jackie Speier of the 12th District, California. Below is some of her reply that came today. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "Dear Mr. Page Thank you for expressing your concern about cuts to the U. S. National Arboretum's budget, and the effect these cuts would have on the care of bonsai plants. I am opposed to any decrease in funding for the National Arboretum. As a longtime advocate of the environment and conservation efforts, I am deeply disturbed by the Bush administration's willingness to cut funding for national treasures like the Arboretum. Despite this misguided approach, I am pleased that so may members of our local community continue to champion this important cause. Last month, Congresswoman Eleanor Norton Holmes and Congressman Earl Blumenauer anounced their efforts to restore the proposed budget cuts. I will do all I can to support their efforts" etc. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- OK folks. You all have email, and your Congressional rep has email. Get on their case. Mike
