I've been there twice so far and am hoping to get a small group of friends together for a trip in the fall, maybe when the leaves are turning. That would be . . . what . . . mid-November? (I grew up in the midwest. I've been here in Baltimore for 12 years, and I still can't figure out the seasons!)

When I eventually get time off I'm making it a point to travel there. These trees are phenominal.

If GOSHIN is truly in that condition, it's a disgrace, and a gross insult to Naka-sensei. If they can't take better care of it, it should be moved to where it can be properly cared for. I first saw GOSHIN in 1979 in John's back yard. It was like visiting a shrine.

From what I have heard in the past week from someone who was just there is that the whole place has gone down hill in a big way. Most of the trees have been neglected for so long that they now are past the point to really bring them back in the original state.... It is sad to know that this exhibit is in such sad shape. But I do know that there are some plans in place to clean up the place and actually try to restore some of the trees. From what I hear they are trying to get a "bonsai" person to run it. That is what it needs to make it good again. FWIW, Jason |

I feel like a bonsai paparazzi, but here is the picture of Goshin on a bad hair day from two years ago. If it helps get bonsai people concerned and vocal about the condition of the trees then it is worth it.
All I know is that two years ago the trees were very healthy, but many of them needed to be weeded. I don't know what the specie is, but if it's anywhere near as invasive as the spurge we have in California it would take full time maintenance to keep the pots clear of it. Carmen |

Carmen, this is sad to see. I can hear John now, and this is the word he would use to describe it. "SHABBY". Not just the weeds, but the foliage, and overall appearance. SHAME on them.
I think I'll send a note to my Congresswoman. Mike

I did email Congresswoman Jackie Speier of the California 12th district. I understand that on the overall importance scale, this problem will rank quite low.
However, it's a start, and if enough concerned bonsaiists raise some hell, who knows. I've only been there once, in 1996, and it was beautiful then. It's very distressing to hear whats going on now. I wish I was closer, so I could go there, take pictures, and stir the pot some. Bonsaiists that are nearby need to do this. Come on guys, step up and kick butt!!!!! Mike
