National Arboretum trip

I just got back from a 10 day trip to Washington DC, and WOW, the National Arboretum is amazing! It was hot and humid and very few people were there. The bonsai and suiseki were more outstanding then I expected. We missed the bonsai events happening this month, but it was a last minute trip (our High Sierra Camp trip to Yosemite was snowed out).

My husband wondered if I even went to any of the memorials in DC, because all my pictures were of bonsai, rocks, and plants.

I am posting a picture of the single kusamono there. I don't know who created it but it is lovely.

I'm inspired, and only hope I can translate some of what I saw to my trees.

Hasn't been exceptionally hot or humid here in the D.C. area in the last few weeks. We've been having lower than average temps--that's changing though. You should be here when it's REALLY hot and humid...

The National Arb. is a little visited place for most D.C. tourists. It's not in a very accessible place and that place isn't in the best area of town . It's also not well publicized (that's not really a bad thing, though). Besides the bonsai pavillion, the grounds are spectacular. The original columns from the U.S. Capitol Building stand on a hill across a small valley from the the bonsai pavillion looking like an old Roman or Greek temple ruin. There are hills and valleys filled with native and ornamental plants. There's a nice pond with a pretty nice bald cypress with knees in one of those valleys...

I agree with all the above comments.

Carmen, make sure to also visit the Weyerhauser collection over on your side of the country!

I still maintain that it was miserably hot! When I got back to Sacramento I drove north to Redding with my windows open and no A.C. 110 degrees felt pretty good with no humidity! I will miss how green everything was back east. California is getting a little crispy on the edges.

I remember that trident, i think it was in a different pot when i saw it. But that is definitely the coolest tree Ive ever seen. Its the only tree that actually made me feel like a giant! Incredible realism, it truely is a mini tree.
Did you see "Goshin"?

I go a few times a year to see the different seasons. Perk of living down the street from it. They did major construction over the last year on the pavillion and it looks better than ever now.
