naming your bonsai?
I know that in japan great masterpiece bonsai are given names. John Naka named his Goshin. Do any of you name your trees? do you only name the great masterpiece bonsai in your collection, or do all of them have names?
If you can, post a picture of your tree and its name. state why you named it that etc.. just curious. marco |

I am trying to name all my trees. I do not have much so it is not so hard for me.
I name them according to their appeareance when i first buy them. It is lot more easier to describe one particular tree than naming as juniper 1, juniper2. Here are some examples of the names and reason. Gulliver- a Cupressus lawsonia "elwoodii"- When i first bought it the season was not appropriate to do something but the inner braches were dying because of lack of light. So i tied each branch with raffia and streched them down to allow light to reach every branch. It looked like Gulliver stranded to ground by Liliputians. Desert mice- Yellow pine. It was very small, retarded and weak and had a natural windswept style. After a wiring it looked like a mice standing on its back feet. Claw of dragon- Shimpaku- Looking very mighty and branches look like a claw trying to grasp. The Hunchback of Balcony- another juniper in cascade style. Holly manitu - Ulmus parvifollia in informal upright style and resembles Indian totems. |

I love naming things in general so this was a no brainer to name my trees...
Not nearly as poetic though.. my trees include Ralph, Zeke, Aoki, Jet, and Willy. |

Mine are all named "friggin" as I would like to take a nap but I need to water my friggin trees or there's a storm coming and I've need to move my friggin trees inside and so on.

lol i personally think naming a bonsai tree is getting a bit too far....
but i dont know if you realise, the MASTERPEICES in japan......some of them are over 100 YEARS OLD......
some are said to be 500 years old....(need clarification....as someone said that old mountain trees several hundred are chopped & dug out to create these old specimens)
anyhow if they are that old....then i guess they do deserve names.....
as i was reading someones post about dead trees..
"tree of death" would be an intresting name...

Bo and Luke - two trident maples in training Maurice - my favorite f. benjamina Clarence - formal upright picea glauca Henry - big hinoki in training And so on. |

When I address my trees I refer to them a bit more formally, such as Mr. Oak, or Miss Cotoneaster. With over 50 it would be hard to remember all the names, and with all of those, I really have no masteroiece yet.
