It's good for pines, but I don't think that any other tree has it.

Not sure what it does, but the pine roots like it.
I have a large collected scots pine that was very sick and it was suggested that it was introduced to help the tree.

Hi Assassin,

Mycorrhizal fungi are usually beneficial to a great many plants and trees and form a natural symbiotic relationship. The fungi helps the exchange of nutrients to the plant, in return for carbon. The fungi basically increases the surface area of the plant root up to 700% or more, thereby increasing the ability of the plant to absorb chemical components needed to grow. The fungi also helps protect the roots from diseases.

Some rainforest, like those in Africa, would cease to exist if it wasn't for these fungi, as poor quality and low fertility soils would not be enough to sustain the trees on their own.

So yes, they are beneficial in most instances to trees and for that matter, bonsais. I recently purchased some freeze dried mycorrhizal fungi which will be introduced to the root systems of my trees upon next repot.

All the best,

Aaron

Before you make that purchase, you should know that myc fungus comes in many forms. Some research indicates it is SPECIES specific. That means if you're buying myc for a pine, it won't work on a deciduous species, it may not even work for some pines.

Commercially prepared myc isn't really worth the money. It's being sold by alot of nurseries for a small fortune. I wouldn't waster the money. If your tree needs it, it probably already has it, or will get it naturally--which means the species will also be appropriate for your tree. Leave things alone. Keep the tree healthy and it will come.

By the way, this stuff is NOT a miracle worker. It will not "revive" your tree if it's sick. It won't cause huge amounts of new growth. It will not make the tree grow faster.

It will let your tree develop a little better, make it more resilient and more robust--but not bulletproof.
