Ron,
The project sounds like fun! I dont know how much of a burden this would be, but do you think that you could perhaps photograph the adventure in stages, so we could see what it takes? The members (at least I) could use the education. Paul

Look forward to seeing the result Ron. A Bald cypress forest, I don't think I have seen one before.

I'll be starting on it sometime next week. Should take me most of the winter to finish the project.
Will post something once a week about the progress. At least till everyone gets tired of it. Needless to say this will be the biggest project in bonsai that I have taken on. Most of the time I will not know what I am doing. Lots of guesswork. Needless to say that once I start the pot won't be moved. Pictures will be what ever I can take. Backgrounds might be bad. Heck even the forest might be bad. But I do plan on having fun with it. |

Thats goin to be one hell of a forest Ron.
I just wanted to make a comment I heard the other day while watching a program called "shotgun Journal" this guy was showing off these beutiful engraved shotguns that were custom made for him in Italy or something and he told the TV guy these words that I will never forget " I hope when I die my wife doent sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them" made me think Lui |

Well so far I have 16 trees in my little forest. Only 41 to go. Not too sure if I will make it. Don't want this planting to get too crowded.
Will post pictures of the trunk bases shortly. This is a bit harder that I thought it would be. Last edited by Ron Martin : 27-Oct-2003 at 08:49 PM. |

Maybe you could make some subgroups to be transplanted as units when their roots have knit themselves together. To get all these trees in there in one go could be a difficult prospect. If you put 7, 9, 5, 13 in smaller trays, and cut some of the root systems so the trunks will abut one another, they can grow together into units you can transplant later.
Just an idea, Matt

Planting them is not the problem. I have plenty of room for that.
The big problem is making the trunks match. Especially the nabari. Each is part of a jigsaw puzzle. They have to flow in the right direction. The trees I am using are all established trees. An apex has been formed over several seasons on them. As the trees are placed in the forest the first consideration is trunk size (that old height to girth ratio). Next will be the root spread. It all has to match. That leaves those old apexes going in every direction. These will have to be re-established to match the forest. Most of the major branches will have to be removed from the trees. New ones will have to be re-grown. All this will be a bit more complicated that I thought. I now have my 16 major trees in place. Only 41 more trees to go. Each of those trees will ,no doubt, change the position of the others in some way or the other. For me this is the biggest project I have ever taken on. I want to do it right. Might be my last big project so it is terribly important to me. It must be well thought out and hopefully well received. The latter being the most important part of the equation for me. Anyway the following photos show the base of the trunks. More will go in so this is just the start. I will just have to figure it all out as I go and hope that I don't go crazy. Here is a close up of the left side grouping |
