Is My Tree Developementally Challenged?
hey everyone, i have a chinese elm that has yet to produce a single bud, let alone a leaf, this year. (its spring where i am, early may) it is in good health, i have scraped bark and found a nice green tree underneath that i wish i could say matched the leaves. my other chinese elm is doing great, producing leaves and backbudding. they are kept in the same conditions. is this common? should i be concerned about anything imay not have considered that may be contributing? any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it. I have a Quince "toyo nishiki" that's also developmentally challenged. For the last three years, it pushes out two or three leaves, which shrivel up and are gone by early summer. It's looks like it's dead until next spring when it does it again. I'm waiting for a burst of leaves and flowers one of these years, but for now, it's just there. It's siblings right next to it are doing fine (cuttings taken at the same time from same tree). I wish I knew why this particular one is like this.

Sounds like it's pouting. Make sure you don't overwater it in the meantime and keep it near its healthy friend for peer pressure, encouragement and comparison.
Regards, Matt

How was your tree wintered?
In my experience late sprouting is a sign of root damage during winter. Not much to do except keep the tree moist but not sopping wet. Keep your fingers crossed. Jerry

Chris:
I'm south of you in Northeast PA. Last year my Chinese Elm didn't even show buds until June and so far this year it's doing the same. Except for the fact that I was so busy with my other trees I probably would have trashed it last year. This year I'm just patiently waiting and ignoring it until then. Not sure how you winter them. I keep mine in an unheated garage. |

Funny, I was just looking at one of my elms and thinking the same things. It started to bud and then just stopped. I have a maple in my yard that is doing this too when all other maples are in full leaf. I'm thinking my own elm might have had too much water over winter. The roots aren't looking good and the is no white tipped growth. Not much I can do now but try to learn from my mistake. BTW, my tree is stull showing green when I scrape the bark, but I don't think it will for very long.
