heyLarry; Here's a little known fact about basswood (tillia heterophylla here in the states), they are prolific rooters and backbudders. I once had a specimen similar to yours that had its neck broken off so I just tossed it out into the back yard behind some bushes. About two years later I was cleaning out behind the bushes and this is what I found.

What do people think about tilia as bonsai? On my housing estate there are loads of tilia europea and a couple set seed in my back garden, in a crack by the house. I'm guessing they are older than you'd think due to the harsh micro climate they endured and the claustraphobic root area setting them down the road to being natural bonsai.

They had to be lifted before they did any damage to the foundations of the house and have survived their first year in 6inch plant pots. (one is around 6inches tall, the other 4-5inches). Their leaves are tiny compared to their full size counterparts and they have a good branch structure to start with (i'll try to post some pictures).

So, any good as bonsai?

Take a look at the first tree on tree beloning to Wolfgang Putz:

http://home.eduhi.at/user/bonsai/Putz53.html

I've also seen some nice ones from Walter Pall.

So yeah, I think it's got a lot of potential! I haven't had as much luck with it here as I would have liked, but it's a beautiful tree.

Best regards,
Carl

Just done a quick bit of reasurch, and i believe the two i have are actually Tilia Cordata (small leaved lime) and Tilia Platyphyllos (large leaved lime).

Thanks Carl, that is a wonderful tree. If the large leaved variety can look that spectacular, i'm now rather excited at the potential of the smaller version!
