Thanks Al. I think i'm going to quit worrying about the tree, i'm gonna end up killing it if i continue. Oh, might I venture to say I really like the arrangement in the picture? It seems harmonious to me. (but read my disclaimer...)

To be really harmonious, the accent should have been a cool display of dried grasses signifying fall. The green accent would look equally good in spring.

Thats the trouble in the central valley, either its green or its dead, there is not much inbetween.

Al, the display works pretty well for me as it is. I don't think you really need to signify autumn more, when the tree is already telling that story on its own. Now, on a leafless tree, signifying whether it was late autumn / winter / early spring would be a different and more challenging matter. I like the idea of using natural objects that signify a season (if that is what your display is partly saying - and it should), without perhaps being the 'usual suspects' of plant in pot, although of course that is justifiable too. We also need to think about location, location, location too - autumn fruits with a high mountain pine would be incongruous. (Although this has been done too).

Grasses and maple works for me, although someone might say that your maple is styled like a pine tree

Regards,

Fish.

just a humorous note, i lived in alaska for seven years, and i had to keep my Japanese maples in the fridge for the winter to keep them from freezing to death. my friends just thought i was weird. "Yo D, wheres the beer? umm behind the bonsai..." haha

any way, good luck with your tree

peace.

If you have been watching this tree progress, you will notice that the crown is becoming more rounded each passing year. Pine now, yes, but maple soon!

Hope to be there by this time next year!

oh, and thanks Fish, Bonsai-al
