Mugo Pine Question

I have a nursery grown mugo pine that I root pruned and top pruned around mid July, as Vance suggested. I removed about a third of the roots and about 1/2 of the top growth. It is in a free draining mix and I have kept it out of direct sun. I have just started noticing that some of the needles are browning. Is this normal or is this tree a goner? Thanks. Donna

I would say that it is all in the climate that you live in.
Vance, if I remember right, lives in Michigan. I think, but not sure that you live a bit further south. Maybe where you are at mid July is a bit too hot for the root pruning.
As to whether or not the tree is a goner. Only time will tell.
Not the best of answers but it is the best I could do with the information presented.

Hello Donna. I also root pruned and styled a pine in mid July, but I only noticed a couple of needles browning. Vance would be the person to answer this question for you. I have just begun learning the Mugho pine species myself. I will say this though. Pines generally take awhile to die. Sometimes a pine can be already dead but does not show signs until 2-3 months down the road. So I'm not sure if your pine would be showing any signs that it is failing this soon. Someone with more experience could give you a better answer. Good luck.

What needles are browning? If the needles are 2-3 years old, this may be normal seasonal needle shedding. If entire shoots/branches are browning, you may have problems. A picture would help.

needles brown/ could be old

hello donna ,

i live in ontario so i believe your climate may have a part to play in the browning of needles aand what you have done so far, i have had quite the summer here very humid.40 to 42 degree's lately. in july i root pruned only a 1/8 of roots also massive prunning of top end and found so far no browing needles except old. i have also noticed since i pinched earlier candles that i have quite a few new buds. i hope your mugo survives they are very nice bonsai when properly taken care of.maybe you could try the links to more detailed info on pines as they are differeant then any other pine except black.
