Mugo Pine?

I got this little tree quite cheap last week - about $6 - but it had no species tag and the "expert" was not in the store that day to answer my question:

Is this is a Mugo Pine?

Yes, it probably is a Pinus Mugo - there are two needles in a bunch, if I understood you correctly... They grow in pairs.

Looks like a Mugo to me too.

Joakim, based on the second picture, it looks like you may have more than one tree, tied together at the roots. I have bought mugos like this from garden centres before. I think they do it to 'bulk up' seedlings, enabling them to be sold as a more substantial plant.

It would be worth taking a look below the soil level to check this before any design decisions are made.

Yes Tom, there seems to be at least two separate plants in there. Will I have any luck separating them (keep in mind that I'm a total beginner) or will I have to sacrifice one?

I will probably repot the whole thing quite soon to get better drainage in the soil and expand the width of the container with a new pot...

Joakim, to be honest I don't know as I haven't tried separating them. I have one like this which I'm developing as a multi-trunk tree (the separate trunks have become grafted at the base), though I'm not convinced its working all that well. Sorry I can't give you any better advice!
