muck

Hello everyone,

haven't posted in a while, hope you are all good.

I'm after a recipe for muck if anyone has got one. its for a clump slab planting I've got going. Would also be helpful if anyone in the UK can point me in the direction of where to obtain the ingredients if they are unusual i.e.: if its difficult to get them at garden/bonsai centre.

Cheers Jonny.

Jonny -

There is some good information in the wiki on muck and recipes for muck. You can get to the information by clicking on " muck " anywhere in this forum.

I use a good old 50:50 mix of clay soil with compost. The clay soil is just dug up from my back garden and the compost is just brought from a garden centre. I find that letting the component soils dry out before hand makes the mixing process easier as the clay can be crumbled up to ensure an even distribution.

Mixing the ingredients dry like Alasdair says worked well for me. I used my standard bonsai mix with a little bit of fines thrown back in and some clay that came from an art supply shop. The clay had gone hard and I thought I would struggle with it, but I shaved some slivers off with a knife and crumbled them with my hands. Combine with the soil mix, add water and mix smooth. 40 minutes at gas mark 6 and then let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Uh, no, forget that last bit...

Regards,

Chris.

Hi Johnny

I use 50/50 akadama dust and finely sifted ordinary garden peat, mixed with warm water to the consistency of paydough.
BTW- my wife is still looking for her kitchen strainer
