Grazi!!! Amazing trees! Can't believe how large they are (the last link), but also how creative all the others are in the other links. Talk about breaking rules - and somehow the 'rules' just seem silly. There is a lightness to many of the designs that you don't see very often in more traditional (Japanese?) bonsai, almost a wispiness that makes literati look stiff and (sorry) cookie cutter. Suddenly I want to try to get out of the box of years of rules (even ones we supposedly 'break') and try to ten new directions at once. Am I raving? Maybe, but what a great way to be shaken up!

Looking at those endless rows of bonsai stock (all nursery-grown), it looks like the Chinese have so much material that they could supply the whole world with high quality pre-bonsai.
Considering that the Europeans and most countries from Asia can import those with no problem (and at very reasonable cost), we Americans can only wish of having such an endless supply. The interesting thing about seing those trees is that they have a very unique Chinese flavor, that we could never achieve, even after growing bonsai stock for the next 20 years. I would find it very exciting to work on such exotic material, they make one "think outside of the box". |

G'day Attila, I'm rather surprised at what you say, as I understand things, the U.S.A., is a huge counry, smothered I would guess in terrific and extremely old yamadori, just for the finding and taking....No? Season's greetings to ya mate, Nigel

Sure, we've got the best yamadori. But it is one thing, having to obtain all the permissions, taking days off work (don't have too many of those), and going yamadori hunting in the mountains, where if you are lucky, you end up finding one or two good ones, but often, nothing. Not to mention the hazards that come with such an activity, such as getting lost, getting injured or killed, getting bitten by rattlesnakes and scorpions, getting mauled/killed by a cougar or bear, getting assaulted by members of a right-wing survivalist colony, or getting your car stolen in a remote vally when nobody can find you, etc (I actually have quite a few of the above on my checklist, from the past).
It is another thing sitting in your home and ordering a few of these great nursery-grown material whenever you wish, with a click of a button or a phone call. I think I'd prefer the latter, although I love to get out in the wild as often as I can. Last edited by Attila : 26-Dec-2007 at 01:42 PM. |
