More Fresh Cut Wood

Our new club will be having its first show in about a month. Actually it is a booth in the annual Wichita Garden Show which is a big deal for the city. After reading the posts by BonsaiAl on his thread of the same subject, it got me to try making some display stands myself.

Since I am not an accomplished worker in wood by any means I thought it only proper to start a new thread and not mix up my paltry attempts with Al's masterpieces.

My first attempt was the stained red oak piece which measures 8 1/2" x 5 1/2". The next two are made from poplar and are finished with black laquer. They measure 12" x 7 1/4". They are a real bummer to photograph and I suspect for that reason they might be less desireable as show stands. On the other hand I have never been accused of being a photographer either.

At any rate I had a lot of fun building them. Does anyone else have any bonsai stuff they have built themselves? It would be interesting to see some of the projects you have done.

WOW! These look very good to me. I would like to see them nore closely. I would love to see those feet on the black ones. Looks like you made some great feet there.

Keep up the good work, Bonsai-al

Al:

Here are a couple of photos of the feet. Boy! It's a bitch taking a picture of all that black. All the light gets absorbed and you can't get any detail of the surfaces. At any rate I took them out in the sunlight and held them at an angle. Hope you get the idea.

Al, you've got competition!

Ed, the black one out in the sunlight looks really nice. Good job!

I have in the past made stuff to do with bonsai. I made a turntable from solid aluminium, all machined on CNC (computer numerical control) machines. It's a bit small really for the trees I have now, but it was great fun programming the job. I actually made 2 at the same time, gave one to my brother-in-law for xmas.

Here it is:

Unfortunately it has gone a bit manky from being left in the rain.
Here is the inside. It probably cost GBP150.00 to make, and you can buy a plastic one for GBP6.00... why did I bother

TB

TB:

That is a beautiful piece of work! I agree that commercially it would be too costly to produce but as a "one-of-a-kind" it is a priceless piece. That's one of those things that a collector would treasure or more probably something that will be handed down in the family for generations.

Good show, old bean!
