Sounds like a great excursion, Al - thanks for bringing us a long with the photos and description.

I look forward to seeing this tree in a couple of years.

With my best regards,
Carl

Al,
Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us. This looked like a great time!
I do have one question, you said you removed the clay soil. How much of the soil was removed from the roots before you wrapped it with moss?

Thanks again
Adam

Today I did some additional clean up and decided that the top of the tree leaned too far foreward. You can't see it in the pic from the front but it does. Not bad mind you, just farther than I would like. It could be compensated for during repotting and leaning the tree back. I just like the way the trunk leaves the soil at this angle.

I tied a large iron rod to the base of the trunk with two wraps of copper wire. I then tied the top over and used a turnbuckle. I like the shape better now, and have the promised pic with a make shift backdrop.

I will leave the tree alone now and watch it through the spring and summer. Hope it goes well, I like this tree and think it has some potential. Bonsai-al

Adam, all the soil was removed from the roots. The junipers can be bare rooted during this time of the year with no ill effects. The junipers seem to respond well, (when they decide to play) to bare rooting. They are not as picky as pines!

Hi, Al.

Nice tree and great photo essay on a trip we'd all love to have been on (even though it's easier to watch hard work!)

Could you post a photo of the arrangement you used to bend back the top?

(Or was the pull simply to get more in line with the line of the trunk?)

Thanks.
