Randy,

Then some art is bonsai and some bonsai are art but not all art is bonsai and not all bonsai are art?

This is beginning to remind me of my first philosophy class.

Maybe a bonsai equivalent of "The Committee for Community Beautification" is needed to tell us which graffiti is art and which is simply vandalism.

Ron...

When are you going to get rid of that yappy little dog and get a cat? Thanks for the kind words my friend.

Will...

One final thought... In the last analysis, if your cabbage bonsai fails to win prizes at the local show you always have the option of throwing it into a pot of boiling water along with a little corned beef and at least you've got dinner. Pines taste nasty, I don't care how much ketsup you dump on them.

Randy,

That reminds me of something Al Keppler once said about bonsai. It went something like....if you only want a hobby, try growing tomatoes, at least then you could eat your disappointments.

Or as my grandfather used to say about deer hunting, "Hect son, I never have found a good recipe for antlers."

Thanks, your humor coupled with knowledge is appreciated.

By making it into a meal, you may end up creating more art than growing it in a pot. After all, everybody enjoys the culinary arts, which is a widely recognized art form.

It is the only art where you can eat your masterpiece.

The old, purported-to-be-cynical and politically incorrect version:

The Committee of 100

100 masters and none could agree
Which 15 of all were the best bonsai trees...

Highly exalted by any measure,
They might all indeed be "National Treasures"!

They hemmed, they hawed and even alluded;
They argued, debated and finally concluded:

"Minimal, maximal, beautiful or not;
At the end of the day, they're all plants in a pot."

The new, more sensitive and politically correct version:

The Committee of 100

100 masters and none could agree
Which 15 of all were the best bonsai trees...

Highly exalted by any measure,
They might all indeed be "National Treasures"!

They hemmed, they hawed and even alluded;
They argued, debated and finally concluded:

"The minimal, the maximal, the beautiful and the...... remainder;
They're ALL 'artfully composed photosynthetic lifeforms' housed in...... containers."

My very first ever 'bonsai magazine' was an isue of Bonsai Magazine March/April 1996.Looking back at my well tattered copy I see this was Randys' first printing as the editor of this magazine.Thank you Randy,my first 'mallsai' and probably the 'Karate Kid' was the bait and this single issue of the magazine set the 'bonsai hook' in deep enough I am still here today.In one way or another you have set the flame.

Red Pine...

I'm pleased to find someone out their who remembers that I was the editor of Bonsai Magazine. I held that exhaulted position for about two years, before the BCI executive board decided to find someone who was more willing to "do it their way."

I don't know whether to apologize or congratulate you for becoming infected with the bonsai virus, but I apparently cannot deny that I had a hand in it. Since there is no known cure, I can only say that I am glad your here. Misery loves company and if you have a compulsion to cut the branches off of tiny defensless little trees, it is well that you hang around with others who enjoy the same activity. May we always show them better bonsai. See ya around!
