meditation on moss

I just repotted my bonsai (serissa) and I found some really fluffy moss at a flowershop. I just stuffed it in my bonsai's container and now it looks like a soft little hill. What are the do's and don'ts of moss and it's application? Moss sure is marvelous.

Re: meditation on moss

I've never really meditated on moss but I do have a couple of thoughts.

It's really not the best thing for the bonsai because it interferes with watering and keeps air [oxygen] from getting to the roots. Most moss will need a shady environment to grow well. Much shadier than your tree will like. Sometimes you have to decide if you want to grow moss or grow bonsai because their needs are so different it's hard to grow both in the same pot. It's almost impossible to grow moss inside the house if that's what you're trying to do. Most people grow the moss in a seperate pot and just put it on the bonsai when it is displayed for shows, etc.

Re: meditation on moss

I find moss to be an excellent and attractive accent to bonsai. It is difficult to maintain in an indoor setting, but can be done (keep moist). The key is to really work the moss into the bonsai soil, this way it will grow and stay healthy; Otherwise, it justs sits on top of the soil, looks great for a few days then dies.

I've found that moss helps the soil retain moisture. There doesn't seem to be inteference in watering unless it becomes hard and prevents absorbtion.

Re: meditation on moss

If it was florist's moss, it's probably Canadian long-fiber sphagnum moss, or spanish moss.

Spanish moss hangs in trees and sphagnum moss grows in peat bogs. Both will stay alive if provided with suitable conditions. I have never used either *on* bonsai soil, but Canadian sphagnum is sometimes used as a soil amendment when it's ground.

I did hang spanish moss on a large Bald Cypress for awhile, but it didn't survive the winter. Looked interesting, though.

If you do a search on "moss" you'll find some tips for collecting, propagating and applying it.

Regards,

Matt

Re: meditation on moss

About 15 years ago while browsing a nursery I found a small packet of what was called Japanese bonsai moss spores. It was only $5.00 so I purchased it and applied it to one of my first bonsai. It preformed as advertised and since then when ever I want moss to grow on a potted tree I will just apply a small pinch in the corners of the pot and in a year or so I have the moss that every one is looking for. It has never harmed any tree that it has been applied to and it helps to keep soil in place. This moss stays green in heat and looks good almost all year long. I consider it to be a perminant part of many of the bonsai that I keep.
I will add this disclaimer.....To all of you newbies out there, befor you take at face value any advice or technique be shure to check it out and experiment on your own. The best knowlege is what you have tried and proven to work for you in your own environment.
