measuring trunk size

Ok may sound stupid but how do you guys measure the trunk of your trees? I was in the wholesale nursery business for 4 years and still part time and we use a caliper which would basically measure from one side to the other. I have seen trees listed on ebay that say 3 inch trunk or whatever and by looking at it I can tell its pushin 1 inch maybe. Just wandering.
Thanks
Greg

Calipers. The schmoos use the circumference method. Tends to be kind of humorous. John

Thumbs up Tape measure

I have just checked this tree as a guide.
The root flair ( nebari ) is 110.5mms (4 1/2 inches ) the trunk at the base is 50mms ( 2inches ) the hieght overall is 250mms (9 7/8 inches ).
I use a tape measure. It gives me readings in metric and imperial. I stopped using calipers when I found that too complcated.
Pup
ps here is the subject used hope this helps.

circle talk;

Diameter = 2 x Radius

D = 4 inches or 4 inch caliper

Circumference = Pie x D

or C = 3.14 x 4

C = 12.56 with a 4 inch Caliper

Greg,

Well . . . I don't have calipers, so I usually just guestimate, sometimes with the help of a ruler. Another way to get a rough estimate would be to measure around the circumference with a string or piece of wire, then divide the length of that by 3. (It should really be divided by pi, 3.1415926..., but most of us can't do that in our heads and a calculator may not be handy. Dividing by 3 will give an answer close enough for government work.)
