G’day Folks,
Perhaps it is one of my stuborn inclinations or just simply my choice of taste of a preference for all things masculine, shying away as I do, from many/all things that appear to be to me, as over-the-top feminine, and I do not hold with the notion that the Literati style is feminine. Regarding what I am writing about, well that is….tree to pot sizes. With my recent collection of an additional twenty trees, two of them are the beautiful Malus halliana, appearing to be like almost a pair, both quite thickly trunked and stubby, both with a fair amount of short branches, both with a lot of new season buds, both looking extremely healthy, but both in two totally different and very uninteresting and really dull Chinese/Korean pots. Almost at the same time I came across two, [a pair] of chunky, good looking Yixing pots, perfect size, colour and what-have-you. Plan is to repot the two Malus H. in early Spring before bud break into these two pots, which many of you would disagree with, as you would regard them [I suspect] as being far too deep. [Shall eventually post pics.] I try as hard as I might to find and collect images of ancient Chinese bonsai, [If anybody knows a site/s where I can find more images please let me know?] and have observed that unlike the modern concept, with many of the trees from periods long past, the pots seemed to play a far more important, overall role, embracing tree-to-pot, or pot-to-tree, and generally speaking, by what I see, in many cases the pots used, are/were much deeper. Bringing to my mind, small oil paintings and mirrors of the 17th cent, where the gilded and sculptured frames used are much more than just very impressive. When I do my nursery tree hunts, those be the specimens in black plastic pots, I stand there making my decisions as to what style and which pot from my growing collection I shall use before I make my final dsecision and purchase the tree. We aim to please. Try the links page here:
http://www.bonsaitalk.com/links/cgi...i?query=penjing and look in particular at the Dwarf Potted Trees link, and the Man lung link. Yes, the pots were considerably deeper in historic trees. It may be aesthetic or potentially because the drainage issues had not been solved. Regards, Matt
