How about Trident Maple as opposed to Japanese Maple? They seem to grow OK in Taiwan, which doesn't get very cold either.

There's a drool-jerker in another thread here.

The trident maple will work. So will the red and the swamp maple.
They might need a little afternoon shade to keep the leaves from scorching in the Florida sun but that should not be to hard to supply.
