Maples for Bonsai - Esveld 2005

It's that time of year again, Esveld the Dutch maple grower is shipping again now that the trees have gone dormant.

I've gone through their website and compiled a little list of maples suitable for Bonsai. This contains species and cultivars traditionally used for bonsai as well as those cultivated for this purpose. This list is most probably not really complete, includes some it shouldn't and misses others, but it should give you an indication what kind of growth habit to look for in maples.

I've not added a great number of dwarf or semi-dwarf varieties to this list, that were not specifically mentioned as being suitable for bonsai. I'd like to point out however that I'm pretty certain that among those other dwarf-varieties there are quite a number of other possible bonsai candidates.

A second list I've added is one of maples considered 'rare' or of 'special interest' which is more for someone looking for something special, not necessarily bonsai related. This list is based on information gained from 'Maples for Gardens' published by the family running Esveld together with the information present on their website.

A third very short list contains a few additional maples I want to point out, either because of their color or their history.

Beautiful stock. A lot of those varieties are well suited for bonsai. I wish that I lived in Europe so that I could purchase some of it. The siegen variety is particularly gorgeous.
