and what do i do for them in the winter...where should i keep them ..is it ok if i keep them in the basement of a minnesota house that is a bit heated in the basement ..not to much ..and what light sorce do i need for them when they sprout for the winter...

Did you stratify the seeds?

i thought there was no need for it ...knowing that i just picked them off of the parent plant a few days earlier...
so they didnt have a chance to fall and they were still a green/pink color..i hope they were mature anough to even grow?!

Any maple that drops its seeds in the fall has to be cold stratified. It is not the freshness that makes stratification necessary, it is chemical inhibitors that are broken down by cold. These inhibitors serve the evolutionary purpose of preventing the seeds from germinating in the fall, only to be killed by frost.

I think JL was the one who alluded to not having to stratify in the other thread, but I beleive he was mistaken. There are some maples which drop their seed in the spring. These seeds do not have the chemical inhibitor because it is advantageous for them to germinate right away.

I think some are getting confused by the fact that many say fresh seed is almost required when trying to grow maples. This is not due to stratification requirements, but to the tendency for maples to develop a very hard outer coat as they dry. The theory is that the embryo either dries out and dies, or the hard outer coat becomes nearly impermeable to water making germination very difficult.

I collect Trident as well as Amur and Japanese maple seeds every year. They do have to be cold stratified regardless of freshness.

no good, you need to wait until they are brown to collect. When they are ready for collecting, you can pretty much just touch the seed and it will fall from the tree, if you have to pull on it to get it off, it isnt ready.
