Maple Repot ?'s

I think i know the answer to my own question here, but i thought i'd look for other opinions. I recently recieved a Deshojo Maple, sent from Oregon to Philadelphia. It's a nice tree, but it's growing in a "dirt/mud" type soil mix (with about half a handful of Akadama dust on top...not fooling anyone). I know that this soil needs replacing, and that these next few weeks would be the correct time for repotting, however i wonder if it would be too much for the tree, having already endured the journey across the states. Any advice would be welcome.

Re: Maple Repot ?'s

Urbansai, Hi. From a novice who has been there, if the tree has not opened its buds it still can be repotted. It has been sleeping for the winter and will be coming around shortly. As a novice I usually do not do major root work on a new tree. This said when you repot this tree make sure you remove what you can of the tap root if its still there. In the situation where the tap root contains all the fine roots just reduce the tap root. You do have some time, even if the buds are opening it can be done!

Re: Maple Repot ?'s

Urb,
If the soil is as bad as you make it sound you must repot and change it. Mud and bonsai don't mix!

The fact that the soil is so bad may be a clue that the bonsai has been in that particular pot for some time , which is a benefit to you in that you know that it is well established Bonsai. _Lets hope for the best, right!

Changing soil will be a great help to you in its future cultivation because knowing the root situation and having it in your own personal soil mix will make it so much easier to take care of in the coming growing season.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Re: Maple Repot ?'s

If it's a young tree and still dormant I'd go ahead and repot it but go easy on the root pruning. If it's leafed out already or you don't want to chance it, there is another option. Get a large grow pot, say 5 times bigger than the rootball and fill with coarse sand. Take the rootball undisturbed and put it in the pot making sure it has sand underneath it and around the sides. That will allow the roots to drain in all directions. I have used this method in a pinch to keep trees over til the proper repotting time.

Re: Maple Repot ?'s

Thanks for the advice from all, I repotted a few days ago and the tree seems to be taking well so far. When i recieved it less than a week ago, it was completely dormant. just a day or two after repotting, about half the buds have begun to swell, some starting to come out. It took forever to comb out the roots, it was totally packed into the mud it was planted in before. It looks much better.
Unfortunately i don't have any pics, might get a digital cam soon though. Probably just as well, i'm not completely satisfied with the current pot, but it's the best choice now to encourage proper growth.
