Maple leaves burnt

I got some problem with my maples. The red leaves maple got most their leaves burnt. May be drying wind and too much sun.

Now we just got into Autumn in Sydney, should I removed all burnt leaves or just leave them to fall off naturally?

Anyone with experience of maple in climate similar to Sydney? Their leaves seems very easily burn. The common green Jap maple and trident maple are better.

Thanks

Many, if not most, Japanese maples need a spot with light shade, or filtered sun and will burn if planted in full sun.

Hi Bonbon,
I have Otome zakura and Beni maiko Japanese maple and have same problem as yours. My area is very hot and dry in the summer and water is too alkaline. Those are enemies of maple.

I place mine in the site which gets morning sun only and use Protek solution (silicon) to support them but still ... This year, I planted my Beni maiko into the ground to see if it's better.

I didn't remove burnt leaves since they will fall off themselve in the fall. Bonhe

Hi BonBon
Sydney summer and Japanese maples do not go well together at all.

Unless you are planning on showing the tree you can leave them to fall naturally. If you want to have an autumn colouring then you should take the burnt ones off (Defoliate) and let the tree give a fresh new crop of leaves that will colour up nicely.

Maples need morning ( summer) sun only here and shelter from hot winds.

Ken

ps most of mine have fared quite well this summer.

Thanks. Just defoliate them, but only the burnt ones. Is it too late for new growth? It's 1 months into Autumn now in Sydney.

Even in the South of England, maple leaves will begin to look a bit the worse for wear towards the end of the season (particularly after a very hot summer, which we seem to be getting more often these days).

I wouldn't remove them this late in the season, it's not really worth it. It's too late in the season to be defoliating with a view to getting another flush of leaves, so removing the leaves now doesn't really serve a purpose.

In Autumn, deciduous trees reclaim the chlorophil and carbohydrates in the leaves and store those products for use the following spring (this is why the leaves change colour, only the insoluble compounds and by products like xanthophylls (yellow pigments), carotenoids (orange pigments) and anthocyanins (red/purple pigments manufactured from sugars trapped in the leaves) are left.

I would let the trees take back whatever goodness is left in the leaves and let the leaves fall naturally.

I gree too late now to do it unless you were going to show the tree and you have to remove them.

Up till the last week in feb is long enought to get a new flush of leaves

yeah KcPool is right.......
hes got alot of knowledge on maples!

sydney sun is bad.... in japan thier temperatures hardly reach 30deg apparently
its a native tree in japan so it wont do well here

so unless you might want to protect it with shade cloth or put it in a section of your backyard that makes it receive morning sun till about 11:30am and shade for the rest of the day.

that would work alot better than shade cloth + all day sun.

i personally say, leave the leaves...dont cut them off...let the tree decide
because deciduous trees store thier energy/food for winter dormacy. so it tries to get everything it can till it loses its leaves. some of the burnt leaves may still function.

just relax... there will be new leaves in spring.

Potassium

Hi, I donīt have much experience with japanese maples, but those burns seems to me a lack of potassium, the leafs show the typical potassium deficiency, tips of leaves burnt in a "V"-shapped pattern, that burnt, tend to go all the way to the sides.

www.omafra.gov.on.ca/.../apple_disordersf37.htm

I donīt know if that is a common problem in japanese maples, but I think that could be also an explanation for the problem.

Regards,

Napo

I've had my Japanese Maple for 1 summer now. Here in Phoenix the day temperatures can get up to 116 F, about 45 C. I only let it get sun until about 8 30, then its in shade for the rest of the day. In the beginning I made a mistake of keeping it in full sun, and the leaves burnt, but crumpled off eventually. I would let it do its own thing, unless you plan on showing it (like someone else said).
