In Manitoba, Canada, what can I plant?
I just moved into a new townhouse with a bit of garden space outside, room for pots, and room to plant straight into the ground.
I want to start some trees from seedlings. What are some good species to get started on giving my climate, and given the current time of year? (mid-September) Thanks in advance! |

Hi Byron and welcome to the forum.
If you take 5 minutes to fill out your user CP with relevant info such as location and USDA heat zone, people will be better able to offer you advice on suitable species. There are quite a few Canadian members on the forum, so I am sure one of two will chime in with some info for you. Other than that, try looking at local trees and finding out their names and also suitability for bonsai culture. All the best, Aaron

Hi ByronA, not sure where you are in Manitoba but there's a pretty active Bonsai Society in Winnipeg that you might consider. Native trees that your local nursery sells is a good reference point from which to start your collection.
Aaron_K is right about your profile...filling it out will assist anyone who tries to help steer you in the right direction. cheers b |

Given where you are, I would hold off on planting things until next spring. You will really gain nothing by a planting now vs. sprigtime.
Check with the Winnipeg Bonsai group as they will have great ideas on what you can grow. Jerry

Canadian and US cold hardiness zones are different. US zones are usually 1 lower than Canadian zones.
For example, I am in Ottawa which is zone 5A in the Canadian zone map and zone 4 in the USDA rating. Elroy |

If you are in Manitoba, I think that "Manitoba maple" is a good tree for you.
It's easy to start from seed but you have to stratify the seeds til next spring. Keep this species for your garden as it's not doing so good as bonsaļ. |

I recommend to you Amur maples (acer ginnala) very tough, seeds planted now should sprout in spring.
As luck would have it there is a thread about them nearby in this forum. |
