Lowes trees
I got this ( I don't even know what it is) from Lowes a year or so ago and it seems very healthy, but it's getting kind of "wild" looking. Is this in need of a major trim job?
Thanks, |

Hello,
It is a Schefflera/Umbrella plant.I would let it grow out fairly wild with a nice full canopy.A website called Fukubonsai.com has pages and pages and pages of info for them regarding styling and culture you can check out sometime. This plant is hard to make look like a Japanese bonsai but does well in the jungle styles. They dont like getting frostbite so keep it well protected in the winters.

Great thanks for the info. I've had it inside for over a year now, do you think sitting it outside for the summer would be a good idea?

yes, but bring it in if the temperature is going to drop below 55 F. you also might want to give it a few weeks acclimating to full sun. eventually you'll probably want to put it somewhere to maximize the amount of direct sun it gets.

we have some of these same trees here in our backyard, and it has really started to take off growth-wise since starting to warm up the last few days. the weather recently has been hot, rainy, and extremely humid. i think they like this weather. i used to have one out in california, and from personal experience, they dont take too well to salt-air (i used to live on the beach in santa barbara).

Ok thanks. Here in Ohio, the weather has gone from 80 and sunny one day to 32 and snowing the next so I've been afraid to put it out. I've never had much of a green thumb, but thanks to this cheap little Lowes tree doing so well for me, I have a new appreciation for... nature.
thanks again |
