Looking for a So. Cal. Nursery

Hey all... Noob here with a dumb question.... but maybe someone will be kind enough to enlighten me?!?!

Anyone know of any nurseries in Southern California where I can pick up some 5gal Shimpaku material?

I've tried some of the local ones here in LA and seem to be coming up bunko....

Did you try calling Chikugo-en here in Los Angeles? They always seem to have lots of shimpaku.

You can Google for address and phone number.

Well, just called em and seems they have 2gal stock for around $170 and up. Is that good, bad, or average? Said they're about 2 ft with 1-1.5" trunks.

Chikugo-En usually has excellent material in Kishu variety as well as some Itoigawa Shimpakus. Another source for Shimpaku material at real good prices is Lakewood Nursery on Lincoln Blvd.

Treebender and I were in San Diego about a month ago, and Joanie drove us up to Chikugo-En. I was amazed at the Shimpakus that Mas had there in the nursery. We both found Kishu variety for under $100. They had a lot to choose from, and the quality was outstanding. Mas and his son Gary are known for their Kishu and Itoigawa grafted onto prostrata juniper understock.

If you are in Los Angeles... I would say check it out. We came from Ohio and it was worth it.

P.S. - Thanks Joanie!

You're welcome, Brian.

Chikugo-En is considered by many to be the best bonsai nursery in So. Calif. Mas Ishii is a Master grafter, and his son Gary is not far behind in that regard. Their nursery is so tightly packed with good trees that it is hard to see them all..... literally.

If you want junipers, try there first. It's a serious Disneyland for bonsai.
