Surely no-one in their right minds would go thread-grafting a Chinese Elm!

The damn trees throw new shoots from old wood all the time...

Is this done in spring BEFORE any buds break? If not, do you deleaf it before threading? And what kind of wood ...sliver...do you plug the whole thing up with?

Again....YIKES!!!

Oh Geez, then WHEN do you cut off all the loopy part?

Think I'll switch to cactus.

Wait until spring...it is somewhat late in the year to defoliate. As for what to plug the hole with...make the hole small enough so that the branch plugs it. If you use a putty or anything else to plug the gap around the branch, it will inhibit the branch growing into and becoming part of the trunk.

Quite often exactly where you don't want them - around the base of existing branches, at congested knots on the trunk. Around the perimeter of branches that were just removed, and also at the base of the trunk.

Also thread grafting can let you put a branch 3/16" thick or even larger, in place overnight.

Regards,

Matt

I'm all about thread grafting, elms, figs, crape mrytles...whatever needs it.You have a nice trunk but not any good branching..thread graft yourself into a 2 year long wait and then enter the halls of darn nice bonsai the easy way.It is a pity to have to drill into nice crackly bark like with Chinese elms but..it's better than the alternitive.
