bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda)

Does anyone here have DIRECT experience growing loblolly pine as bonsai? I hear pretty consistently that its needles are too long, but never can ascertain whether the person with advice has actually grown this species themselves.

To be clear, I'm not asking if loblolly pine is suitable for bonsai (and to be clearer ...don't bother answering that question).

bwaynef,

I hope you don't mind my response (if so I'll delete) as I do not have direct loblolly experience, but a gentleman in my club does. I've seen one that he has been training for like 30 years or more. The needles seem fairly long, but I can't remember for sure if I've asked him specifically why they are long or if he's attempted to reduce. I could ask next month to make sure. I don't think he's a member here. I do know he absolutely loves loblollies. The tree I've seen is around 2' to 2-1/4' tall.

Thank you so much for the reply (and PM). I'd appreciate any input you could give. (ie: will you harass him for me?)

I had hoped some of the pine barons would weigh in on this.

You might want to PM Daytonabonsai. He has a very nice loblolly bonsai in training for quite a while.

No help here but I had to acknowledge your term "pine barons". Has a rather nice ring to it

There is a picture of a pretty nice loblolly pine over on the IBC in the main gallery post "Dallas Spring Show." It's about three quarters of the way down the page...

Thanks rockm. Someone had already (out-of-band....via pm) pointed that tree to me posted elsewhere. Its a pretty believable example I'd say.
