Huh? Live Oak

Does any one know any thing about the live oak style. Here in Mississippi there are many live oaks and they are beautiful and I was wondering how the looked as a bonsai. If any one knows please tell me what kind of species could be used to make this style.

Please put many pictures if any one has any.Thank you.[B]

jaron,

The 'live oak' style has become for me a major goal in my bonsai collection...This is my third time around with bonsai, and this time I find myself concentrating more on trees that look like the ones I see often...The Southern Live Oak [Quercus virginiana] is one...

I am currently working on 'Yaupon Holly' and 'Japanese Boxwood' with the 'live oak style'...These trees stray far from many of the accepted guidelines of bonsai [branch size, taper, and curvature; overall outline shape; callused wounds], yet the artistic guidelines should still be present in my opinion

I do not know of a collection of 'live oak style' bonsai photos, but I am also interested in seeing some...

I think you may find this article of interest

Lake Charles Bonsai Society Newsletter

and

Part 2

I hope to some day see a book written and devoted to some of the Southern US styles...Flat-top Bald Cypress and Live Oak for example...Perhaps you will be the one to author such a book...I keep watching for something from Joe Day on the subject, but have not heard of anything...

Regards
Behr

I have posted an attempt at the live oak form using kingsville boxwood. Check it out in the gallery.

Regards,

David

Here's a link to a photo of a live oak (quercus virginiana) bonsai:

http://www.american-bonsai.com/cata...oducts_id=2819.

It's darned expensive for such a small tree, but approaches the "natural" live oak style.

I have been working with a large collected live oak bonsai for the last five years. They are great bonsai material to work with.

The subspecies quercus virginiana "fusiformis" is probably the easiest to work with and the hardiest when it comes to cold --although this probably isn't a concern down your way. Fusiformis also has smaller leaves. It's an upland species that grows primarily in Texas, though.

I think others are working with the coastal form of this tree in your area.

Here's a just re-styled attempt at doing a kingsville dwarf box in a "live oak" style, with suggestions from Mike Page and Jim Lewis last winter.

Does any one know if Joe Day has any live oak style bonsai I'm going to his house to buy some maple seedlings.

Thank You So Much Everybody I Really Appreciate It.

jaron,

Here is a couple pics of one of the most viewed Live Oaks around these parts...This one is in the court yard of the Alamo...I have several pics of this tree...it has certainly been an inspiration to me in attempting to style some of my trees...I am really fond of the curving branches that quickly identify the Live Oak, and this tree is a good example of this feature...Since it is located in the heart of Downtown San Antonio, I can not get far enough away to get a pic of the entire tree...

Regards
Behr
