Lime Sulfer

Howdy All,

I have a question about lime sulfer for the dead wood. I am looking to lime sulfer the trunk and the outside of the carving up to the top of the tree..Can I pick up this lime sulfer at any Home Depot, or is it a special type that I need? Pictures are as follows.

Thanks,
Anthony

Lime-sulfur is usually found in the insecticide area of most home improvement/hardware stores. It is used as a solution for a winter spray on some plants. The only thing that varies is the concentration. Some are much more diluted that others. Most will do the job though.

Make sure you don't touch anything "live" with it though. It will kill it. It's a good idea to cover the soil while you are using lime-sulfur. A little bit of "flecks" off the brush is not a big deal, but whole drops are. Just use some caution. Also, let it dry thoroughly before you water. I recommend you limit watering to just the soil for the first day so as not to wet the affected area. Think of it like hydrogen peroxide. We use it (in very diluted strength) to clean wounds on our skin, but full strength would eat the flesh off the bone (then eat the bone). It's not quite the same, but I think you get my point.

You may already know this, I just wanted to make sure.

Good luck and best regards,

John

I visited a demo by Danny Use (sp?) on saturday and he told us that lime sulfur should be applied to wet wood only. So you should mist/wsh the dead wood down just before you apply a coat of lime sulfur. btw it was a fantastic demo

Rowan,

Very true. But once again, it's important not to wet the wood immediately AFTER application. It will cause the solution to run down to the soil, possibly enough to kill the tree. Rowan is correct about the moist wood for application. It works a lot better that way. Just no water IMMEDIATELY AFTER application.
