Lifting a Pine from a brick wall?

Hey guys I was just wondering when would be the optimal time to lift a pine tree from the top of a brick wall ? The tree is growing from the top of a single wall left over from an old building near a friend's house, we are almost certian that when we call the owner and ask permission he will give an emphatic "I don't care what you do, just don't get hurt!" So the only question is now WHEN. The needles are turning a yellowish green, i'm sure as an effect of the roots being colder than it's ground-bound neighboring trees, whose needles are still dark green. Should this be looked at as the tree is in need of being removed from the cold brick wall ASAP or, as the tree is not at full health and as such should not be touched untill it gets warmer and the tree turns back green green again,..IF it makes through the winter? The trunk is rather nice and I really would love to have a pine, even if the needles are kinda long and it will have to be a larger size bonsai to ever be in proportion,...I still really like the trunk and want this tree. Please advise as to timing and condition as they pertain to lifting from a brick wall. Thanks ya'll. Jeremy M.C.

Pine from wall removal

I think you should consult the "Pine removal from wall" manual.

Zen,

This is just about the start for collecting season for the south, also alot of pines do get a winter color so the tree may not be sick at all..Get a pic going and make sure the pine is even worth going to the trouble to collect.

I agree - this begs a picture! Is it a mortared or unmortared wall?

Regards,

Matt

Gday Zen!

Even better, I suggest you take a video camera when you go collecting the pine. Even if you do not get the tree out intact, you could be a contender to win some money on Funniest Home Videos! Be careful up there!

i tried to remove a Beech tree from top of a wall.i thiught it was just a case of pulling and the tree would be free-wrong assumptiom.2 hours later i gave up.the roots had worked there way along the gaps in the brickwork searching nutrients.some off the roots were about 3ft from the trunk.the tree was about 18" tall-root over wall instead root over rock .its still there clinging to wall.check the roots first Zen,you might encounter the same problem i did.
