Lessons in Osaka or Kyoto?

Hi, i am staying and working in Osaka right now. I am new to bonsai and don't speak much Japanese. I would like to know if anyone knows of a good place where I can learn the art of bonsai from? Since language is a huge barrier, I would like to have someone whom i can try to understand rudimentary stuff. Anywhere between Osaka and Kyoto would do. Thanks a lot.

thanks.

The irony! So close to it all, yet you bounce back to the States for advice on where to go.

http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/RTG/PTG/pdf/pg-812.pdf (Theres a few places mentioned under Osaka.)

You are envied. Not so much in your inability to communicate in Japanese (I can't either, but theres nothing worse than not being able to communicate) but for your proximity to such great material. Let us know how it goes.

I can find out tomorrow, for you. Friends of mine regularly travel to Japan, on trips with bonsai students. They'll know where, if any, English speaking teachers are to be found.

Yeah I know it is ironic. On top of the lack of language ability, I also lack the time. Working in a Japanese firm is not joke, my hours, daily, consist of 9am-9pm at least... Saturday is to recuperate, and Sunday is too short. Ah well. thats Japan.

I've been to all the places and the recently held biggest Bonsai Exhibitition in Kyoto described in that pdf document you attached herein. I know kansai is great and kyoto is superb, so no complains

Actually, the hobby is practiced by mainly old people, or house-wives in Japan. Friends or colleagues always give me a strange look when I tell them that I like fiddling with tiny trees in a pot (I'm 28, not that young i know). So my point is, you don't really get to see bonsais everyday in Japan. Like most things in Japan, you really have to dig deep to find the pearl.

Furthermore (sorry for the long rant), due to the lack of space, I have no garden and I live on the ground floor. Thus forcing me to put my bonsais at my "back-yard" which opens to a quiet street. Two weeks ago, I lost three of my shohin bonsais...a kiyohime-maple which I carefully pruned the whole summer for the foliage and starting to turn red, a maple-grove, and a shimpaku-juniper which I recently repotted and jinned and kensai-ed in an old Chinese pot.... sniff snifff... I was heart-broken... didn't realised how attached I was to my trees...

I don't know it this helps, but here's a link to J Bonsai, a bonsai tour operator over there

http://www.j-bonsai.com/index.html

I have done business with Nakamizu and he's very helpful. Although he's based in Tokyo, he might be able to help you out.

I've contacted him. Alas, he was unable to do much considering the distance between Tokyo and Osaka. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

CandyCane Bonsai Training

Heya, i just signed up to this forum an hour or two ago.

As it happens my 1st post to these forums touches on my trip to Japan - and a picture of the owner of this fine establishment in Kyoto.

Hiroichi advised me that he had an Australian student that came once a fortnight.

This might be just the ticket for you.

Good luck!!

I am jealous as jealous can be!!

It is a bit of a trip from Osaka - but if you can afford it, just hop on a bullet train once a month and take up the classes.
I also visited some amazing bonsai nurseries in Kinashi - just outside Takamatsu. This may be more viable in terms of distance to travel.
AIf you like I can see if I can dig out the details for you.

I took the liberty of pasting the site contents of the Kyoto Nursery for you:
