LECA anyone?
There's an expanded clay product by this name suggested for terrarium substrate because it provides good root aeration.
Anybody use it and with what success? Here's a site: http://www.azdr.com/ProductDetails....ductCode=LECA10 I'm not promoting it, never have used it, looking for knowledge.

I'm not sure if this ends up being another name for haydite soil conditioner. It appears to be expanded shale. Most important thing to check would be particle size.

I use LECA and it is imo a very good bonsai soil - very fast draining. Be sure to fertilise well and the top layer 'looks' dry - just test the layer underneath to see if it needs watering again.

Hi
Ive been using LECA for two years now, and it is a great soil for plants that need good root aeration and excellenenet drainage. Trident maples love it, so does ficus, juniper and Chinese elm. Only thing is I cant seem to find small partilcle sizes, so it is used primarily on pre-bonsai along with some soil mixed in, or in my regular bonsai as a drainage layer at the bottom. Down side is it requires more frequent watering, and regular fertilizing since it is completely non-organic, and thus it is a kind of hydroponics.. I hope this helps..
