Leaves not dropping from Acer cutting

Hi All,

I have an Acer cutting taken in the summer (about 10" tall) and it has yet to drop its leaves, and they haven't changed colour either. The tree I took the cutting from dropped its leaves before Xmas.

Is this normal?

Cheers,

Andy

Yes, it is normal. The act of taking the cutting has delayed the genetically determined growth period, so it will try to grow as late into the winter as it can to complete its growth cycle. However, you should make sure it still gets a chill period. Keep it between about 28F and 40F as much as possible. It is critical for it not to fall below the low temperature as new Acer roots are very susceptible to freeze damage.

Thanks for the replies!

It's currently in a 10 gallon pot, buried into the soil (to the same level) and covered with ~1" of rotten grass cuttings.

Would it be better to bring it into my greenhouse?

Cheers,

Andy

I noticed the same thing with a JM cutting I started this summer. It finally dropped it's leaves, but it was way behind everything else.
