one of my initial thoughts is some sort of lighting and or climatic change. due to the increase in intensity of the sun in the great white north these days, i wonder if your watering regimen is not keeping up with the ficus's needs.
why do i say this my ficus nerrifolia is always in an east facing window. the temperature today was 72 degrees F and it's been in the teens all this week. i've noted that the watering i do for this tree has gone up quite a bit in just the last month with the warmer outdoor temps and increase in intensity of the suns rays. that being said, if your tree is under a grow light,.....post that response and someone here will no doubt help you out.
regards and good luck.

Kris .. north facing window in Canada is near darkness to a tropical plant. I might suggest a grow light of some sort for the winter months .. hopefully getting it outside full sun in the summer. Ficus often drop some older leaves just prior to new growth.
