Late Taken Cuttings Help

Hi, I know there has been some disscussion of willows and how they can root at any time of the year. So I wanted to grow some for my self and started them about 3-4 wks ago.I forgot that here in northern Ohio winter comes in nov and trees turn in mid october. What should I do with the cuttings. They only have a few root hairs off them. Should I let them lose there leaves and give them winter protection or should I have them be "tropical" for just this winter and have them keep growing through winter? Thanks

I'd give them really good winter protection. You probably have 3-4 weeks after the top sheds leaves before the roots stop growing up that way. Just mulch pretty heavily around the cuttings and keep them out of the wind as best you can. Willows really are NOT that fussy.

(I had a neighbor whose weeping willow lost limbs during an ice storm. This was february-ish. About a month after the storm in my backyard I see a limb (about 2") that had broken off her tree and fallen into my yard. I guess the force drove the base down into the soil a few inches. It took considerable effort to get the tree out, because it'd already rooted.)

By the sounds of it your winter comes at the same time as mine. I took some willow cutting this time last year after reading a thread about willows. The ones i took were about 2cm across and i just pushed them into some very gravely soil and left them. I was slightly worried about how they would do. They were left unprotected all winter and didn't do much until late spring this year when they took off. More roots than i could shake a stick at and i've got some decent primary branches already. Willows are prety much indestructable, but do seem to randomly loose branches for no obvious reason.
