YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

Larch repot question
Greetings, I have a decision to make and would like some input from those who possible have been there before. Here is my 'problem'. I have two collected American Larch that are dormant. I've decided (with advise last fall from David Easterbrook) to join the two as one planting this spring. At this time one is experiencing bud swelling the other is not. I know the best time to repot Larch is when the buds are swelled and just before they open.
It appears that the larger tree will open first, being it is swelling. The smaller tree appears still dormant. I will be going to a repotting group this Sunday at my local club and if the larger tree is indeed ready will be doing the deed. Obviously the question to those in the know is....I am likely to be successful? What can I do to improve my odds. and yes...I will try and photo document the event. Jay note---- corrected spelling above

Sorry, my error, most not have been clear. I have two Larch. Both were alive an well last fall. The larger tree I have owned for several years. The smaller tree was just obtained in the fall and I had thought of combining it with the first. I ran my idea past David Easterbrook (Montreal Botanic Gardens etc) and we designed a plan. Now the spring is coming and I have the problem listed above.
The reason for the design change...two individual trees becoming one, was a choice I made so as to improve them both by addition. Jay

Jay, I don't think it will be a problem. Do you have to do a lot of root pruning to them? Probably, especially since you are grouping them, they will be close.
But assuming that the bud swelling is an indication of the starches stored in the roots are making thier way up, and it wouldn't be until this point you want to repot, how about moving the smaller non bud swollen tree to a somewhat warmer sunnier place( whilst keeping the already swollen one cooler) to try to let it catch up with the other. Whew, thats a big run on sentance, sorry. Supposedly only takes 2 - 3 days of warmth to snap them out of dormancy. I'll check a really good source for Larch and try to get back to you before sunday. Bill, good thought on bringing the little one into warmer conditions. I did it a little while ago and hope this will help.
As for the roots, I will have to see when I do the deed. The big one has been in the same pot for two years and the little one is new to me. Thanks for the thoughts Jay
