Larch Project
While working hard on many many, trees putting them out of winter storage I stumbled over this larch. I figured that I must style it immediately, otherwise the foliage would come out in a couple of days and it would be too late again for this year.
This tree was collected about ten years ago in the Alps. I put it into the growing field for five yers and then planted it into this pot. It had many live branches which died one after the other from fungus, as larches often do. I left it alone for a couple of years and just one of the branches survived and lookes very healthy now. It is possible for trees to compartmentalize themselves - create physical and chemical boundaries which make it impossible for fungus to go any further. It looks like the larch has done just that. |

Less than an hour later this is what it looked like. Since ther were so few branches it was not a big deal.
I will now leave it alone for another year and hope for a lot of new ramification. The larch is only 50 cm high, 20 inches and it is more than 100 years old. best regards Walter Pall |

Walter,
I'd like to stumble over a tree like that... :-) Are the big stumps on the left and right both roots ? I'm susrprised the tree survived without them. Did you cut them in stages ? regards, René |

Walter,
Larch are one of my favorite trees and you certainly have access to the best . You also bring out the best in them. Thanks so much for sharing. Regards, Jonathan

Amazing tree. I'm fairly new at this and have not had experience with Larch, but wow! I would not have the insight to create something like that!

Walter,
Thanks for the info. I love the way you styled this tree. I think it's very well done. Just curious : what will you do with those roots ? Leave them like this or make jins ? René |

René,
no idea yet. I have the habit to just leave things for a year or longer and eventually all of a sudden do the final thing. I must be in the mood to make a drastic decision for this special tree. I have the great fortune to have so many trees that there are always more than I can work on. I will probably never ever finish a few hundred of my trees. Why should I worry then about this larch? best regards Walter Pall |
