Laceleaf Maples

I don't see many people using them and haven't seen any in the gallery. Is there a reason why? I bought two last year that I'll be asking your advice on soon with pics and want to know if there is something I should be aware of.

Also, I'd love to see pics if any of you have them.

Hi Mittar,

I like them. This one is just a twig in a pot, but it's a nice twig in a pot (in my opinion):

Thanks OMC, mine won't be near so elegant or delicate and have some pretty serious flaws. But I love the leaves so much I couldn't resist them when I bought em.

I'll probably get some more this spring.

Dissectum

I have found that the difficulty in creating bonsai increases greatly when you try to use the cutleaf or (dissectum) maple. More often than not the cutleaf maple is slow growing and does not respond well to bonsai techniques like root pruning.

Hi,

My experience with my cutleaf/laceleaf is not a good one. It is alive and its very beautiful, but since I bought it three years ago, its taken a beating. In my part of the world it is out of the growing zone neccessary for it to be happy. Our winters are harsh and the growing season too short for it. I ask two questions, one to myself.....why did I buy it? My answer is....I didnt know the species at all,j ust that it was indeed beautiful. The second question is to Wally World (Walmart).....why do you sell these species when the tree needs extra protection and attention in our winters, even in the ground?

But anyhow....OMC, I too think that your link shows a great little specimen. I would enjoy it as well on my bench.

Mittar, I am not planning on using mine as bonsai, just as a ornamental deck plant in a big fishbowl pot. That is where it seems happiest, I feel any bonsai technique done to it would surely be its demise.

Two reasons:
1. Won't take to life in a pot for long
2. Ramify's poorly.
Enough said for a maple..

Well, I suppose I've got some work ahead of me. I won't be to shocked if they keel over mid summer.

But damnit, they're so pretty, lol.
