Unhappy Lace Leaf Maple

I have a lace leaf maple and i noticed today that the top part of the tree is turning yellow, i did a scratch test and the lower part of the tree is green except where the graft was done, would it be ok to cut the top part back, and do u think that would help? What are the signs of overwatering?

whats turning yellow?

you need to be more specific about the graft part . . . is it green below the graft, or above it . . .

cutting back will probably not help . . . laceleaf maples are not strong growers.

it is green above the graft and the top half of some of the branches are turning yellow. The tree was repotted in a faster draining mix so maybe that will help.

History then: When was it repotted, and what did you do when you repotted it?

Where has it been kept for the winter and how much have you been watering it?

Has it ever been defoliated?

When was it fertilized last, what was it fertilized with, and how much?

Anything else you might think of.

PS; Don't do anything else to it till we have a chance to figure out what's going on.

ok answers to your questions vance, it was repotted yesterday, in a mix of lava rocks bine bark and dri zit, this was done after i first posted. Winter it has been keep in a greenhouse outside. It lost all of it's leaves for the winter, and had no problems up until yesterday when i noticed the yellow, the last time any of my trees where fertilized was just before winter, and i used fish emulsion. I have 2 other japanese maples and they are doing fine in fact they are starting to bud out, as the weather here has been odd. Today the temp was 71 and tomorrow is is supose to be 71 again but then saturday the temp is suppose to drop to the 40 or 50's, i just don't understand what could have happened to it. any help will be greatly appericated.

When you repotted it what did the roots look like? Did they smell kind of like sewage? How wet or dry was the soil ball?

I know you want answers not questions, but you are not going to be able to get anything but guesses unless you are willing to answer questions. These would be the questions I would be asking myslef if faced with a similar problem.

hi vance,
the roots looked like roots, they wern't black and soggy and all that, like i have read in some post about root rot, and it did not smell of sewage, the soild was pretty moist when i repotted it . I do not mind answering any question if it will help my tree, i have only had this plant for about a year so it is still in training, but it has fast became one of my favorites because of the delicate leafs.
