Kuma Bonsai in San Diego County

I've promised a thread regarding the beginning of our new bonsai nursery. I was waiting to take pics of most of the stock first, but decided to go ahead with some of the "in progress" pictures, and add as we move more stock in. Cindy Read and I are partners in this project.

The nursery is Kuma Bonsai at Rancho Jojoba, 11935 Hwy 67, Lakeside, CA. That's in San Diego County, about 20 miles east of San Diego proper. Rancho Jojoba is the name of the established (but neglected) nursery site that we are now sharing. It specializes in California natives, Australian and S. African drought tolerant plants. Despite its neglected condition, it has lots of nice stock.

The first, the front of the nursery as it existed when we started.

Weeding has been going on for about 6 weeks now. Since there were lots of old logs, pallets, chipped trees, etc, we decided to go for a rustic style. We mulched part of the display area, and set up logs for tree stands.

Weed cloth and shade cloth were priorities, as was the construction of a security fence around part of the space. Keeping with the rustic theme, pallets and cinder blocks make up the bulk of our "benches". The hoop house with the shade cloth was constructed by a friend, from bent half inch conduit with dowel rods holding the top together, and rebar driven into the ground to secure the base.

We're constucting displays for specialty plants - succulents, for example. The first picture is a model train area still under construction. More specialty plant displays are planned.

Weeds, weeds, weeds.....there's a yellow rake in there for scale. The third pile is pulled honeysuckle, a patch 40 ft long by 5 ft high by 6 ft wide that had to go. Anyone who plants honeysuckle in the ground around here should be shot!

The piles of pots show the amount of dead stock we removed from the neglected nursery. In many areas, there was 50% mortality.

I'll be taking more pictures of stock we rescued, and stock we've brought in. We've got an open bank account, and made our first sale this week! Still working on finishing the logo, the website, and the first set of advertisements. Give me a shout if you're heading this way. We'd love to walk you through the place.

Brian

Brian,
Looks great! Seems to have been a few weeds there, hmm? Lots of work, but now, looks like you are getting things headed in the right direction. Congratulations on your first sale, and continued success as you continue down this path. I most certainly will stop by on my next visit down south, and will send my younger brother your way.
So much neglected stock, too, but I imagine you'll have no problem filling those pots with great potensai. You're living the dream, man, living the dream.

Scott

Wink

Brian,

I'm in the market for weeds. Got any? Oh yeah, honeysuckle, too.

Best wishes,
Jeff
