KRON4 San Francisco TV news segment on GSBF Collection - North

I just caught the tail end of a Channel 4 KRON news segment at 6:25PM about the GSBF garden a few seconds ago. They showed a 400 year old Japanese Black Pine and the Daimyo Oak imported by Abe Lincoln's envoy to Japan.

I didn't catch the whole thing but right at the end they mentioned the collection might be losing its lease in the future.

I think they might repeat this in the next broadcast. Maybe someone could grab it on TiVO or tape?

Regards,

Matt

Yes that is the one. Looks much better than 4 or 5 years ago, too.

Regards,

Matt

Here's a strange page showing the collection...
http://www.gsbf-bonsai.org/Collecti...sive_garden.htm

you can get a view all around...

If you hold the left click on your mouse just slightly to the right or left of center, you can slowly view the whole garden without getting dizzy.

Kinda cool!

Is this it? There were a few pictures linked from the GSBF site, and it said "feel free to copy what you want". So, I did!

So anyone who has been there, is this the oak?

That's a Coastal Live Oak (Q. agrifolia) the Daimyo oak has really big leaves.

This was it on Nov 6, 1999 with Mr. Yasuo Mitsuya. It looked a lot better on video tonight. In 2000 it was in a tub so it could grow out and handle the restyling.

It was not a great bonsai but the trunk did have a lot of character.

Regards,

Matt

I was there this weekend, they are doin a creditable job with the trees. That is the Oak. The Black Pine that they are refering to was brought in for the 1916 for the Pan Pacific Expo and was in the care of Mas Imazumi until his death. The tree is nowunder the care of Boon who has worked to restore it to it's appropriate state ofhealth and grandeur. I can tell you that it may be 400 yers old, it certainlyhas the stature, but it appears physiologically to be much younger. I believe it has found the fountain of youth.

This is very interesting.
I've never been to Lake Merritt since I lived in Oakland in 1970-71 so I've never seen the tree, but I am astounded that at 400 years old it looks as John describes. You wouldn't have any trouble convincing me that someone had collected it 2 years ago, at least, as I see it in Joanies picture. Astounding.
Maybe I better go out to the garden and re-look at some of those trees I've had for 20 years and STILL don't look like anything

Speaking of the 1916 Pan Pacific Expo, I was amazed at the gallery someone posted a thread to a few weeks back that showed old photos of the world fair on Treasure Island. After spending two years of my life on Treasure Island going to Navy Schools it was very interesting. But, I never did hear, WHAT are they going to do with the island now? Any of you San Francisconians know?

Dale
