Korean Hornbeam Hardiness

Hi everyone,

I am looking for opinions on the hardiness of Korean Hornbeams. The information on the internet is highly variable and the tree is not listed in my most trusted source - Missouri Botanical Gardens.

Bonsai BCI species guide has a general hornbeam page which says carpinus go from zone 3+, but they do not specify which hornbeams they are talking about. I know that C. carolinia and C. betula are super hardy, so they could be referring to these.

I am coming across wide ranges of hardiness, everywhere from zone 3 to zone 7.

I am in zone 5.

Do any 'coldies' out there grow hornbeams who could offer me some concrete info on this trees hardiness?

Thanks,

A.

Hornbeams should be fine where you are, but you could always go to the experts - Toronto Bonsai Society meets at least monthly - check with Edwards Gardens about when and who to call.

Carpinus Koreana is zoned 5 in USDA.

I live in zone 5, and all my tree's are sheltered in a foam box i make cover with straw.

Since I use this method I have not less a tree.
