John, it looks like you have done very well, both child and bonsai. Made me think of a haiku I wrote for the exhibit directory for my club show this past weekend. We had several spectacular satsuki on display.
within each flower is found universal truth a path to heaven Mike

Charles, Honestly I don't know. Does he have a kiln mark? I am not real big into pots, although I do have a few valuable ones. I usually buy them based on compatability with the material and secondly, price. I am extremely slow to recognize the maker at times. I'll try to remember to look and see if it is marked in any way. It seems like it was modestly price, well under $100, as I recall. BTW, I'll consider the rent-a-son idea if you agree to cut 1.5 acres of grass every week. Take care, John P.S. Congratulations on your Honorable Mention.

Attila, Trust me....it's luck, not smarts. My nine year old daughter just got her E.O.G.'s (grades of the quarter and age testing) and is extremely gifted. She also likes to help with the bonsai. Didn't one of the robber barons once say to succeed you have to surround yourself with smart people? In my case, it's even more important!!! ![]() I bet you will get yours to enjoy bonsai as well. My advice is get them some inexpensive (but forgiving) material, and let them have free reign with it. That's what got Ashley and Casey interested. I think I posted on that about a year back (I'll try to find the thread). Take care, John

Mike, Very profound haiku. Thank you for sharing that, and the kind words. While my satsuki (specifically) is becoming close to a "show-able" bonsai in a more professional degree, it is very rewarding to display it in an area where "common" (i.e. non-bonsai enthusiasts) can see it. At least three people went up to the satsuki, after the service, just to touch it, because they thought it was fake. (BTW, someone needs to develop a cultivar that doesn't smell bad in bloom don't you agree?) Over the years, the displays in the sanctuary have resulted in about a dozen church members trying bonsai as a hobby. I really believe there is something spiritual in it. Warmest regards, John

Here is another shot of the satsuki. Sorry, it ain't the best picture. I'm very happy with the progress of the nebari. It has one area that was scarred that has to be improved, but in about four more years, it should be a negligible flaw.

My middle child (an 11 year old boy) was interested right away. He asked me to get him a hemlock, because it's the state tree of pennsylvania, so I did. He touched it and had a bad reaction on his skin and now he doesn't want to try anymore
I think he actually touched one of my junipers and doesn't want to admit it. My 6 year old daughter is still interested but I'm not sure I'm ready to let her hold the shears yet. Pretty soon though! BTW, I also have a boy that thinks I'm nuts and doesn't understand why I work with the little trees.JP

JP, It's too bad your 11 year old had a bad experience. That may be overcome with time though. I know what you mean about the young ones and the shears! That was a major hurdle for me. I explained to them that was one aspect of safety that would be 100% enforced. Proper use was mandatory. So far, that has been carried out (hopefully to continue). Good luck with the kids. It's really enjoyable to have them interested in bonsai. John

I'm 16 and all of my friends think i'm crazy for doing bonsai. most of my friends are jocks and don't have any patience, though. even when i go to club meetings, i'm about the youngest by an average of about 35 yrs.
JP, maybe give your kid a pair of gloves and explain to him that he won't get a rash from the trees if he wears them. jo
