Maybe I should move this thread to the "Contributors Only" section here at bonsaiTALK? Think of the potential windfall! Regards, Matt

I second the motion to close it all together. The subject has been beated up back and forth ad nauseam and it appears to be of interest to only a small fraction of Bonsai Talkers.

I move to keep it open.
I'm one of those small fractions that still enjoy seeing what will come up next. As has been said before, it will die on it's own in due time. Jay

Keep it open, its not doing anyone any harm and even if it is only of interest to a small group, do you sacrifice their interests for no good reason?
Admittedly i havent posted but i have read this thread with great interest as i think it brings up some very interesting issues to do with modern day publishing of a niche magazine. Regards Rowan

The issue of the quality and relevance of articles in BT will not be addressed by the publisher offering $200 (or any amount) per article to authors. The fact is that the nearly all of the articles submitted to Stone Lantern are simply unpublishable. If Wayne were to publish most of the (very small number of) articles submitted, his magazine would have to fold; so severe would be the backlash of unsubscriptions.
You cannot get blood from a stone. The number of quality artists in the US and those who have the requisite skill to produce compelling article content in is very small. Of those, the number who have the ability to properly photograph and construct a viable article is also small. Being a competent bonsai artist does not mean being a competent article producer. These facts are impacted even more when you consider that in most cases it takes months to years to construct a relevant, compelling article for a quality publication. Few have the patience and resources to do so - and then get paid a pittance for their efforts. Publications like Kindai Bonsai control most aspects of their article material, from having the entire months/years-long article process scripted out in advance, to professional, staff photographers who know exactly what they're after conducting the photo shoots, to having a comaratively vast pool of resources - both artists and material. In the US, the availability of quality plant material and artists is comparatively miniscule. This, combined with the fact that article materials here are nearly always produced by non-professionals and without a script, plan, or publishable result means that publications like BT survive by publishing the best of the poor crop - when there even is a crop. By the way, this situation is unlikely to change. |

Well gosh, let's all just give up.
I keep forgetting; Is there like an International bonsai WAR or something? I always thought bonsai was first and foremost about enjoyment. Silly me.

Someone said it earlier so they deserve the credit, but the remark is valid.
It is very difficult to carry a publication that must cater to both beginners and experts alike. Collectors, stylists, and those who are just satisfied with photos. It will not please ALL the people ALL the time. Bonsai is NOT declining in the U.S. though. We are an impatient bunch, and therein lies the problem.
